Parrots

... are an order, known scientifically as the Psittaciformes. The order divides into three superfamilies: Psittacoidea (true parrots), Cacatuoidea (cockatoos) and Strigopoidea (New Zealand parrots). The Old World parrots are a family within the first superfamily. The budgerigar is the only species in the genus Melopsittacini; its scientific name is Melopsittacus undulatus.

The budgerigar is a type of parakeet – this being an informal classification of various parrot species, all with long tails. Budgerigars are commonly known in American English as parakeets.

There are nine species of lovebird. They belong to the genus Agapornis, in the Agapornithinea subfamily of Old World parrots.
